GLASSHOUGHTON WELFARE 1
MALTBY MAIN 0
WELFARE GOT THERE DELAYED SEASON OFF WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE RESULT FOR NEW MANAGER ASHLEY FIELDHOUSE
ALTHOUGH A PURPOSEFUL MALTBY COULD EASILY HAVE SHARED THE SPOILS
In an even opening the pace of Welfare’s Danny King was a constant threat to the visitors defence,
King going close on a number of occasions during the early exchanges. Welfare
heaved a sigh of relief as a drive from the visitor’s Andy Wood screamed past Codd’s goal, but in the main although
both sides went at a blistering pace with some deft football being produced the
custodians were hardly troubled and were not called upon to make a direct save.
Following a good first half Welfare seemed somewhat out of sorts from the resumption and Maltby began
to command large parts of the play but with the hard working Carl Fox the home men kept in contention and in the 53rd
minute appeared to have broken the deadlock when King finished off a fine move started by Fox but was ruled offside. With the game heading for a draw and both teams gaining the point they had deserved
Welfare struck gold, Paul Arkle’s drive being helped on through a packed goalmouth by Mark Newton to wrong foot keeper
Nicky Scaife and although the visitors came back strongly Welfare with Paul Mattison and Richard Dobson being strong in defence,
held out to snatch full points.
Team: Carl Codd, Gareth Liversedge, Paul Mattison, Richard
