BRIAN’S BLESSED TROOPS GO THROUGH !!

CASTLEFORD CHALLENGE CUP – SEMI FINAL

At Pont Colls, Wed 8 Feb 2006

GLASSHOUGHTON U19’s        2           MITRES WELL     1

DESPITE HAVING TO FIELD AN UNDER STRENGTH SIDE CUP HOLDERS WELFARE WENT THROUGH TO THE FINAL IN DEFENCE OF THEIR TROPHY AGAINST A USEFUL MITRES WELL SIDE ,.

In a game almost of two halves Welfare were the better team in the first period, the pace of Leon Henry and Andy Seed proving more than a handful for the Mitres defence.  The vital break through came on eighteen minutes, Daniel Facey making the most of a defensive error to dink over the keeper and give Welfare a deserved lead which surprisingly they were unable to add to before the interval.

From the interval restart Mitre came strong and for large periods bossed the game, although Welfare had clear chances through Leon Henry and Andy Seed to kill the game off, but it was the persistence of Mitres that paid off, John Bradley squeezing home the leveller after some indifferent defending from Welfare’s back line.

As the tie looked to be going in to extra time Welfare countered the offside ploy of Mitres to force a corner kick and with the Mitres defence failing to clear Welfare’s Scott Greenwood forced home the winner in the eighty eighth minute to take Welfare through to face the winners of the other semi-final tie between Pontefract S&S and Airdale FC, to be played at Glasshoughton, Wednesday 8th March.

Welfare’s man of the match was central defender Micheal Foster
