West Riding County Cup                               Tue 31 January 2006

Quarter Final

GOOLE AFC                                                  1          GLASSHOUGHTON WELFARE                  0

PUTTING THEIR RECENT INDIFFENT FORM BEHIND THEM WELFARE TOOK THE GAME TO THEIR MORE ILLUSTRIOUS OPPONENTS AND WERE MORE THAN UNFORTUNATE NOT TO PROCEED THROUGH TO THE SEMI-FINAL

In a end to end opening period Simon Collins saved the visitors by heading clear under some pressure and after Goole’s Steve Davy had produced the first shot of note Welfare came out strong with Danny King and Lee Parker searching the home defence.  The pace of King took him clear to beat keeper Chris Hill only for the angled shot to come back off the upright.  Simon Collins elected to look for King when a first time volley may have been more productive and when King broke again for a one to one with Hill he was unable to beat the keeper on this occasion and the teams went to the interval on level terms.

Minutes from the restart Welfare suffered what was ultimately to be a match losing setback, keeper Ian Philiskirk seemingly being baulked and losing a cross for James Bonarius to stab Goole in to the lead..

From then on neither side was unable to secure a clear advantage but on 80 minutes Welfare got the stroke of fortune which their play had merited when Andy Seed took on the defence only to be hauled down en route to goal but unfortunately Mark Newton blazed the spot kick high and wide.

Welfare gave everything in the closing minutes and Newton appeared to have redeemed himself and saved the game only for his fierce header to rebound off the upright with Chris Hill well beaten, and Goole were pleased to here the final whistle.

Team:  Ian Philiskirk, Adam Sadler, Mark Newton, Karl Jankowicz , Mark Newton, Simon Brooker, Andy Seed, Simon Collins (Darren Leech), Ashley Brewer, Danny King, Jamie Thompson, Lee Parker (Alex Higgins), Gareth Liversedge, Liam Chapman
